Maciel spent most of his childhood away from home with friends; his parents treated him harshly—his father physically assaulted him, taking out his anger on the boy, while his mother humiliated him, even though she always provided what he needed. Despite suffering frequent physical and psychological abuse at home, he never harbored deep resentment toward his parents. At school, he was popular with everyone, praised for his grades and natural good looks. His routine changed during adolescence; he began spending his nights out on the streets, skateboarding and smoking with friends. He was popular with both girls and boys, a dynamic that helped him discover his true self. When he revealed his secret to his parents, their reaction was negative—so much so that they kicked him out of the house at sixteen. From then on, he lived with friends, helping to sustain a challenging life while still just a teenager.
